Politics & Society in St. Leo’s College
The Politics and Society subject is taught as a two-year Leaving Cert course, designed to deepen students' understanding of politics while empowering them to have a voice. The course covers a range of topics, including power and decision-making, human rights and responsibilities, contributing to communities, globalization and identity, and the impacts of globalisation.
Students have the opportunity to participate in various enriching experiences, such as visits to Leinster House and the European Parliament, as well as engaging in political events and debates.
In Transition Year, we are part of the EPAS Ambassador Schools Programme, which aims to raise awareness of Europe, democracy, and political choice among young people across the European Union, while encouraging students to be active participants in shaping their communities.
Throughout the academic year, we organise a week-long event called Diversity and Inclusion week that showcases and celebrates the diverse communities we have within our school. We set up an information point, connect with schools in other European countries, and complete the EPAS workbook where each student who participates receives an EPAS certificate at the end of the year.
As an EPAS school we were delighted to be invited to participate in a webinar with MEPs.
TY politics and society classes attended the webinar with MEPs from the European Parliament about young people and how they are coping with covid.
Message about the importance of languages from Tony Connelly
The aim of this programme is to increase awareness of Europe, democracy and political choice among young people across the European Union.
Ambassador schools do this by organising a Europe day event, setting up an information point, linking in with schools in the other European countries and completing the EPAS workbook. Each participating student receives an EPAS certificate.
