We are also very grateful to Languages Connect for their wonderful support of our exchange with Lycée Étienne Oehmichen again this year.

For the second consecutive year, St. Leo’s College is organising a school exchange with the support of the Languages Connect programme.

Our French Department had a very successful first edition of their language exchange last March and April. Our partner school « Lycée Étienne Oehmichen »is based in the Champagne region, in Châlons-en-Champagne, France.

8 students from each school participated last year and this Spring 10 more transition year students will have the opportunity to improve their French.

The French students and their teachers stayed in Ireland for 10 days last year and attended classes during the week and took part in so many fun activities. There was a day trip to Dublin, a cycling tour of Kilkenny, a ceili and even baking scones to name but a few. All students were paired with an Irish student and stayed with them for the duration of the exchange. This was and remains a great opportunity for all to make friends, practise speaking French and English, become more independent and most importantly have fun!

The Irish students then travelled to France a few weeks later and got to enjoy another 10 days with their partner and attended classes over there too. In France, we had a fun-filled stay enjoying a day trip to Paris, discovering a champagne cellar in Reims and speaking lots of French!

This exchange is part of Languages Connect, a national initiative to promote foreign languages in Ireland. St Leo's College was chosen as one of 10 schools in the country to avail of a grant. What a fantastic opportunity for students to be totally immersed in the language they are learning !

In partnership with St. Mary's Academy CBS and supported by Carlow County Council, we participated in the Town Exchange with Dole in France. In mid February we welcomed our young French visitors to Carlow. We participated in a walking tour of Carlow led by Dermot Mulligan, Curator of Carlow Museum. The group was delighted to be accompanied by Mayor Andrea Dalton and Cllr.Fintan Phelan, Chairperson of the Twinning Committee. We had had chocolates, excursions to Kilkenny and Dublin and a presentation at the Municipal meeting at the Town Hall. We were delighted to be able to offer our French visitors the same wonderful hospitality which our students were afforded in Dole in Autumn.
