Congratulations Edel Colgan

Winner of Action Aid Ireland Speech writing and Asthma Society Own Our Air Competitions
Congratulations Edel Colgan

Edel Colgan (TY) was one of the winners of the 2020 Action Aid Ireland speech-writing competition held on June 2nd. She was one of ten students nationally to be shortlisted to present her speech to judges and an assembled audience in the final. The competition was originally scheduled to take place in the Royal Academy n Dublin on March 24th but was instead broadcast online via Zoom on Tuesday evening.

Edel would like to thank Mr. O' Flaherty for his guidance.

Action Aid provides long term support to women and children in developing countries so they can overcome the obstacles holding them back. They work with vulnerable communities in Kenya, Ethiopia and Nepal in an effort to end early marriage, prevent gender-based violence, gain land rights for women and help girls receive an education.

The success of Edel’s presentation on her chosen topic that “Climate change will only be solved through the inclusion and empowerment of women” means that she, along with the other winning candidate, will travel to Stockholm, Sweden (when circumstances allow) to meet with representatives from organisations and institutions working on environmental issues as well as a visit to Action Aid to learn about their work on gender-based violence in a Swedish context.

Edel also won the Asthma Society of Ireland 'Own Our Air' competition.

Congratulations Edel!
